An incremental decision algorithm for railway traffic optimisation in a complex station

چکیده

In heavy traffic nodes of rail networks, as in main stations, conflicts and subsequent train delays greatly propagate during operations. A disturbance which is at origin only a few seconds long can quickly lead to other delays of over five minutes. To limit this phenomenon, newmethods andmodels are necessary to optimise the use of scarce resources like platforms and track sections. The operator controlling traffic has to select and evaluate alternative solutions that reduce delays caused by conflicts. This task can be formulated as an optimisation problem, where the decision variables are the selection of the alternative routes and sequences for trains and the criterion is the sum of delays. This optimisation problem is a joint scheduling and allocation problems and is considered to be a NP-hard problem which makes it hard to solve using exact methods for a reasonable problem size. In this paper, we compare two heuristic methods for solving the problem. The first one uses a two-phase approach to perform independently resource allocation and scheduling. The second one performs incrementally the two kinds of decisions at track section level, i.e. at each step, the algorithm performs decisions of allocation of a track section or scheduling a pair of train runs on this section. The algorithm uses a measure of the criticality of the track sections to heuristically choose between making resource allocation decisions or scheduling decisions.

Railway traffic optimization by advanced scheduling and rerouting algorithms

In the last years, real-time railway traffic optimization experienced an increasing interest due to the expected growth of traffic and the limited possibilities of enhancing the infrastructure, which ask for a more efficient use of resources and the application of more advanced decision support tools. This paper presents a computerized train dispatching system, called ROMA (Railway traffic Opti...

Time Consumption Modeling of Planning Vertical Profile of High-Speed Railways

Recent years, High-Speed railway has become a hot topic of railway development. Many countries in the world have built relatively complete high-speed railway networks. Each of them enjoys its own efficient traffic organization system and method, as well as a theory of station distribution layout. Based on the railway traffic conditions in China, the designer is adopting special procedure for bu...

Computer-based decision support for handling uncertainty in railway traffic and transportation

Railway transportation has great potential, but interdependencies in the railway traffic make trains very sensitive to disturbances, which can be difficult to handle. Using railway in an intermodal transport chain may complicate the interconnections with other modes if there is large uncertainty in the performance of the railway. A study based on interviews with several customers of the Swedish...

Dynamic Cargo Trains Scheduling for Tackling Network Constraints and Costs Emanating from Tardiness and Earliness

This paper aims to develop a multi-objective model for scheduling cargo trains faced by the costs of tardiness and earliness, time limitations, queue priority and limited station lines. Based upon the Islamic Republic of Iran Railway Corporation (IRIRC) regulations, passenger trains enjoy priority over other trains for departure. Therefore, the timetable of cargo trains must be determined based...
